Comparing to my prelim

I think I have progressed a lot from making my preliminary task to completing my final piece, I enjoyed this one a lot more. I found it better working on my own for a start, as you can only depend on yourself, there is no conflict with anyone else and it's all purely your own work. I think as our (as I worked in a group for that piece) prelim task was very simple, we found it easy to do although that was probably the first time i'd used a proper video camera so when I came to start filming my final piece I had to get the hang of the camera and have a few little practise shots with it first. As for the prelim task I don't think we actually had to edit anything so when it came to editing my final piece I stuggled a bit to start with as I was using a new program but after a while I really got the hang of it and found it really easy and quick. I enjoyed doing all the editing, I found it rather interesting and fun to do, playing around with different transitions and title shots.
As for the actual camera shots, I used the 180 degree rule, high angle and low angle shots in my preliminary task and in my final product I used high and low angle shots again, hand held moving shots, close-ups, extreme-close ups, mid shots, POV, and full length shots.

The only equipment i needed to use to create my product was..

  • a video camera
  • imovie HD
  • mobile phone

Editing..

Once I uploaded my film, i had to sit and edit different clips together, sort out the order, add transitions and credits and add my voiceover. This didn't actually take that long as I didn't really have much to edit, the transitions and titles probably took the longest.

Storyboards

After coming across the problem with the location for my filming I found a new place to use and re drew my storyboards with a couple of changes.

As you can see from my film I did not stick fully to my story boards, I chose not to use any diagetic sounds only my non-diagetic soundtrack which was the voiceover. I believe that using the voiceover works better for my type of film and just gives more effect. It also just helps to show exactly what is going on throughout my film. I also cut out the flashback of the argument with her mother, I didn't think this clip was particulary important, I don't think it was needed and I changed the scene with her friends from a party to her and her friend just at home having a pillow fight, I think it's just a bit more girly and a nicer scene. I changed the Title of my film from 'The End' to 'Is This The End?' I think it just allows people's minds to wander a bit more and use their own imagination as to what happens in the rest of the film. I also think that if I had called it 'The End' it wouldn't suggest much for the rest of the film as thats the end, theres not much else that could happen, where as being is this the end, it just gives it a bit more and if i was to make the rest of the film there is so much more I could do.

Also, these story boards do not include the credits and titles or the transitions which I added once i had uploaded and edited all my clips to make them exactly how I wanted them. I chose to have the flashbacks in black and white to show that there is a difference, to show that they were in the past and that she still thinks of all those times. I also added a 'ripple' effect as the transition for when the flashbacks came in, I think this just helps people to understand that they are flashbacks, so they don't get confused. I added credits to show who was in my film (me and two others), I had them come up at different times during my film and I had them on a black background, I used a 'cross dissolve' transition for when these slides came in.
This is the script for the voiceover i will have playing throughout the opening scene of my film, i believe this shows just how my character is feeling and why she feels that way. I think i need this as it just helps explain my film a bit better and shows exactly why she is in the position she's in.

I recorded the voiceover on my phone as i thought this is how she would record it if it was real. i didn't want it to sound perfect. You can hear noises and sounds in the background and i think this makes it sound a bit more like reality. I wanted it to be just like these are her last words, and I feel it works this way.
After i recorded it on my own i sent it via e-mail to myself and downloaded it to itunes from there i added the soundtrack straight to my film.

Questionnaire

I decided to construct a film questionnaire to find out what people want and expect to see in a film. I ask about certain elements to help me decide what to use and what not to use for example flash backs, twists and turns or special effects. I asked an equal amount of males and females as i didn't want to aim at only females. I asked mostly 15-19 year olds as that is what i want the main age of my audience to be.

I found that i got very similar amounts of answers for all my questions, it came back very equal. I had almost equal results for the question 'do you tend to watch Romantic Dramas / Thrillers?' which tells me that this genre is not entirely popular or a favourite of all people although almost every female i asked answered yes. As it is my favourite type of film i still chose to use this genre. I found that people definately prefer twist and turns in a love story rather than a typical romance, flashbacks and special effects came back pretty much equal although i have decided to use flashbacks as it will be a way for me to explain exactly why my character comes to the decision she does. More people said they expect music in the opening sequence than not so i did think about using music but instead i have chosen to use a voice over to add effect and to show exactly how my character is feeling. As my last question states most people said they like to see action right from the beginning which is why i chose to go straight into the location of the jump and get right in there with the action.
